Kentucky Republicans are flocking away from Governor Earnie Fletcher (R-KY) (right) after he pardoned nine current and former members of his administration earlier this week. The move effectively ended a criminal investigation into charges they broke the state's hiring laws. Both of Kentucky's US Senators are refusing to comment.
Lt Governor Steve Pence (R-KY) is standing by his boss. He issued a statement saying:
"The power to grant pardons is a privilege the governor has every right to utilize."
That's a lot different from what Lt Gov Pence said on the campaign trail in 2003. Back then he was railing about then Governor Paul Patton (D-KY) pardoning two members of his administration under indictment.
Back then, candidate Pence said:
"[T]hings like that are not going to happen in a Fletcher-Pence administration."
Lt Gov Pence refused to comment to reporters on his 2003 statement. (Cincinnati Enquirer)
