Fuzzy Math
In the wake of growing criticism of the federal response to Katrina, Washington is flooding America with numbers: gallons of water delivered, meals served, numbers of people evacuated.
Problem is, the numbers don't always add up.
Homeland Security says the feds saved 32,000 lives as of Tuesday afternoon. They say 23,000 of those were saved by their own -- the Coast Guard. Then they say the other 9,000 were saved by federal lawmen.
But the Defense Department says they saved 13,000 people.
Since then, Homeland Security suddenly quit issuing numbers of evacuees. They swear they're not "double" counting evacuees.
Maybe FEMA Director Mike Brown's counting horse is tapping his hooves an extra time or two. (Chicago Tribune)
