Internal documents from FEMA show that Director Mike Brown waited five hours after Katrina had hit the Gulf before requesting 1,000 Homeland Security workers to the region. The papers also show the then gave them two days to arrive.
Director Brown's letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff called the storm “this near catastrophic event” and said the people's duties would include having to “convey a positive image” to the press and public.
FEMA's admitted that no major request for DHS people came until the storm was already ashore. (MSNBC)
