Don't Think

Sound familiar?

As with the 9/11 attacks, the Bush administration says the Katrina disaster was unexpected and could not be predicted:
"I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees." -- President Bush on Good Morning America, September 1, 2005.

"I don't think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center." -- Condolezza Rice, White House News Conference,
May 16, 2002

In both cases, there was plenty of evidence that both could happen. The levees were not built to handle a Category 4 hurricane, and there had been a previous attack on the World Trade Center.

In 2000, FEMA predicted the three most likely disasters facing the US were:
  1. Terror attack on New York City
  2. Major hurricane with flooding in New Orleans
  3. Major earthquake in California
Two down. One to go. Anticipate it.
