Chief Justice Dead at Age 80

Chief Justice William Rehnquist 1924-2005

Chief Justice William Rehnquist has died. He'd been battling thyroid cancer.
In his 2001 book, The Supreme Court, Chief Justice Rehnquist laid out a simple, clear-cut theory he followed in reaching decisions:
"Go beyond the language of the Constitution, and the meaning that may be fairly ascribed to the language, and into the consciences of individual judges, is to embark on a journey that is treacherous indeed."
In The Rehnquist Court: Judicial Activism on the Right, Herman Schwartz collected 15 essays from top legal scholars. Collectively, they argued that the Rehnquist Court's conservative 5-4 majority erased social gains of the New Deal. The writers concluded that the Rehnquist court diminished legal rights of the elderly, poor, and others on the lower end of the social ladder.
President Nixon nominated Mr Rehnquist as an Associate Justice to the Supreme Court on October 21, 1971. After being affirmed by a 68-26 Senate vote, he was sworn in on January 7, 1972.
President Reagan nominated Justice Rehnquist for Chief Justice on June 17, 1986. The Senate affirmed his nomination on a 65-33 Senate vote on September 25, 1986.
He was sworn in on September 26, 1986.
