Hurricane Messages from Around the World

Words of sympathy and offers of help are pouring in from around the world in response to Hurricane Katrina. World leaders have expressed shock that a natural disaster of this scale could hit the US. Some of what they're saying:
  • China's President Hu Juntao: "the American people will definitely overcome the natural disaster and rebuild their beautiful homeland."
  • Pope Benedict XVI prayed for hurricane victims
  • French President Jacques Chirac -- who's publicly quarreled with President Bush -- sent a message of sympathy beginning with "Dear George"
  • German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder sent his sympathy
  • Queen Elizabeth II said she was "deeply shocked and saddened"
  • Swiss citizens have swamped the US Embassy in Bern with offers of help and donations
Islamic extremists praised the storm, giving it a rank in the jihad against the US. They referred to it as "Private" Katrina. Meanwhile, "General" Dynamics continues to churn out "Major" Weapons Systems blasting the hills of Afghanistan. (USAToday)
