The penny is getting a makeover in honor of the Lincoln Bicentennial. The 16th President was born in 1809. The 2009 penny will keep the profile of Mr Lincoln on the "heads" side. But there will be four new "tails."
Each image will depict a different part of Abraham Lincoln's life:
- His early years in Kentucky
- His Indiana youth
- His Illinois years, which sent him on a political trajectory from the Illinois General Assembly to the White House
- His presidency in Washington
Senators from Indiana and Kentucky joined the Illinois delegation in sponsoring the change.
