Ferrying Pork: The Mystery Money in California could Benefit Alaska

We told you last week that a private marina got $20 million in pork for ferry service between Oakland and San Francisco. Rep Lynn Woolsey (D-CA) lobbied for the money, but wasn't aware it'd been included until the highway bill came out.

Investigative columnists for the San Francisco Chronicle have been digging a bit deeper. They say Congressional sources keep pointing at Rep Don Young (R-AK) as the source of the money. He's chairman of the Transportation Committee.

When asked about why an Alaskan Republican would throw $20 million to a California Democrat's district, another Congressman point out: "They build ferryboats in Alaska." (SF Chronicle)
