The Philadelphia Daily News suggests that Supreme Court Sam Alito dodged the draft in the Vietnam War.
Judge Alito was born April 1, 1950. He was in college in the 1971 when Congress did away with the college deferrment. And his birthday came up number 35 in the draft lottery in 1972. That meant he was among the first 10% of young men to be drafted.
But the young Mr Alito was able to avoid the draft and get a hard to get spot in the Army Reserves. The Daily News points out that his father, Sam Alito, Sr was the Director of New Jersey's Office of Legislative Services at the time and had ready access to a lot of powerful politicians.
