President Bush's Non-Midas Touch

President Bush had a personal connection in at least two defeats in Tuesday's election.

In St Paul, Minnesota, it was "political payback" time for Mayor Randy Kelly. Mayor Kelly endorsed President Bush for re-election last year (left).

Voters swept Chris Coleman into the mayor's office Tuesday -- in a 69% to 31% landslide -- the worst defeat of any St Paul mayoral candidate in 20 years.

In Virginia, Jerry Kilgore (R) (right) lost his bid for Governor the day after a visit from President Bush. Mr Kilgore had avoided appearing with the President at an event in Hampton Roads just 11 days before the election. Mr Kilgore finally appeared alongside the President just ten hours before polls opened in Virginia -- not enough time for his opponent -- Lt Gov Tim Kaine (D) -- to put the appearance into campaign ads.

The Washington Post reported the following morning:

"In jumping into the Virginia governor's race just 10 hours before polling booths open, President Bush put his credibility on the line last night and ensured that the results will be interpreted as a referendum on his troubled presidency."
The Post analysis also suggested the White House had nothing to lose -- with the President's poll numbers -- hovering in the mid 3os -- are already so low that losses Tuesday couldn't sink them any lower.
