Karl Malone Scores Against the Feds

NBA star Karl Malone (right) owns a construction company -- Malone Properties -- in Missippi.

Federal officials tried to turn away his offers to help the Katrina cleanup -- because he offered to do the work for free:

"We took six million dollars of equipment and most of the guys from my company. But when we got there, they told us that because we wanted to work for free, we had to go home. That we needed a government ID number or a contract to haul out debris." -- Karl Malone, on KMPC-AM
Mr Malone didn't listen to the feds and went ahead with the free help. His people cleared 115 condemned homes in two weeks -- allowing reconstruction to begin. (Sports By Brooks)
