Democrats took both Governor races tonight, Tim Kaine (below) winning in Virginia and Sen Jon Corzine won New Jersey.
The Corzine-Forrester race in New Jersey has been called one of the nastiest in modern politics. Mr Forrester ran ads quoting Sen Corzine's ex-wife.
In Virginia, Jerry Kilgore (R) ran a series of ads featuring the families of murder victims criticizing Mr Kaine's personal opposition to the death penalty. It may have backfired with religious voters. Mr Kaine countered the ads with his own -- saying that his opposition came from his religion's teachings.
Mr Kaine's win came the day after President Bush traveled to the red state of Virginia to campaign for his opponent, Jerry Kilgore. The trip was seen as a risk for President Bush as Republicans consider distancing themselves from him and his policies going into next year's Congressional elections.
In New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg (R) coasted to an easy re-election. (USAToday)
