Congress is talking a close look at the 1872 mining law that lets big companies by public land for just $2.50 an acre -- less than what it costs the rest of us for a week long pass to those same public lands.
The plan before Congress would force the price up to $1,000 an acre -- or a "fair market value" if there is mining potential on the land.
Considering that an ounce of gold sells for $460 these days, $2.50 is a pretty good bargin for an acre of ground. (CSM) [Click on the Christian Science Monitor Graphic to read the full article]
