I'm Home, Now Shut Up!

Chief Justice William Rehnquist has left the hospital but has no plans to leave the Supreme Court.

"I am not about to announce my retirement."
--Chief Justice William Rehnquist
Statement of July 14, 2005

The Chief Justice has been hospitalized twice in the last four months -- most recently for a fever. The first thing he did after getting home from the hospital this time was to put out a statement to squelch the resignation rumors that've been flying around for weeks. I've never understood the commitment to tradition that Supreme Court Justices have. It seems a matter of prinicple that Chief Justices particularly serve until they die. He's probably in the best position to determine if he can still do the job -- but considering his condition -- it sure gives a lot of creedence to the theory that law clerks really do the heavy lifting for Justices.

He is the only one who knows when he feels it is time to retire.
No one else. This is his decision, not the press, etc.
Why do they keep pushing for retirement? So they can keep the news going?

Not remembering if Rehnquist is a liberal or conservative, and I believe liberal or moderate, he may just be waiting for the next president, especially since President George W. Bush has a few appointments on the federal level, including at least one other Supreme Court Justice to fill. Many times, the justices do wait for the president of their choosing and like to enter office before retiring.

The Chief Justice has been hanging on in spite of his health because he does not wish Geo W. to have two Supreme Court appointments. President Bush will surely try to appoint those who hold his idealogoy rather than possess great legal minds.

You are on the right track, however I think he is waiting out the mid-congressional elections.

American values have never been in greater jeopardy than today under the oppressive and dishonest administration of G.W. Bush. Tragically, Americans are not well-enough educated to understand what is happening to them. Rehnquist does understand though and he is holding his post heroically, as long as God gives him life, in hopes of preventing this president and his cronies from casting us irrevocably down the path of fascism. LTG Boykin was right when he said we're engaged in a war with the devil. He just failed to recognize what role the devil has adopted.

You know...the anonymous comment a couple back having to do with knocking the Bush folks...is really hard to understand. Saying that we are in a war with the devil? We may very well be.. its called terrorism...and I for one, dont want to wait and have several more '9/11' s or worse happen in my hometown and to my family or my friends or my country. Gosh, get your head out of the sand (or where ever you have it) and stand for something thats meaningfull. And to say we are headed down the road to 'fascism' shows your absolute ignorance to what that really is. Please folks...lets be tough with terrorists while we still can....And back to the subject...Mr Chief Justice, please think of the future of our great country. Retire and rest; and let a healther and younger man wrestle with the coming issues.
