RNC Chairman Ken Melman apologized to the NAACP Thursday for the GOP's "southern strategy" launched during the Richard Nixon campaigns. The southern strategy was designed to appeal to white southern voters upset with the civil rights movement. It served as a wedge to divide southern voters -- eventually leading to the fall of the "solid south" voting pattern for Democrats. Chairman Melman told the NAACP it was "wrong."

I think it's an empty apology. He's just doing it for electoral purposes now too.
If he actually went and spoke to Southern white conservatives and told them that the approach was wrong, I'd be a bit more impressed.
