Former Texas Governor Ann Richards (D) has been diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. It's one of the most lethal form of cancers.
Gov Richards is best known nationally for her Democratic Convention speech in 1988 where she said of the then Vice President and Republican Presidential nominee: "Poor George [H.W. Bush], he can't help it...He was born with a silver foot in his mouth."
She's a recovering alcoholic who smoked heavily for 20 years -- giving up both alcohol and tobacco in 1980.
She served as Texas' 45th Governor until losing to George W. Bush in 1994. (AP Video/Houston Chronicle)
