The former chairman and vice chairman of the 9/11 Commission are critical of Congress' approach to overseeing the Department of Homeland Security. Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton issued a joint statement through the 9/11 Public Discourse Project. They praised new House rules establishing a permanent Homeland Security Committee. But they say it won't have complete jurisdiction over the Homeland Security Department. They claim that many different committees hold sway over different parts of the new federal department, making it difficult to hold the department accountable to the people.
