Schools Playing Catch-Up Computer Game

The Education Department is out with a new report showing schools lagging behind the rest of society when it comes to computers. The report found students far ahead of teachers in computer literacy, a lack of money for computer training, and a slow approach to embracing broadband connections. "Education is the only business still debating the usefulness of technology," Education Secretary Rod Paige says in the report.

The report did find some progress:

  • 15 states offer some form of "virtual schooling"
  • Increases in using the Internet for tutoring, tracking student performance, & communicate with parents
  • 9 in 10 students use computers in their daily school work
Almost every school is now connected to the Internet and there is about one computer for every five American students. (SF Chronicle)
