Welcome the New Boss, Just Like The Old Boss -- Guess We Got Fooled Again

Rep Jerry Lewis (R-CA) is the new head of the House Appropriations Committee -- the panel where most pork barrel spending originates. The folks at Citizens Against Government Waste point out that in campaigning for the chairmanship, Rep Lewis circulated a petition showing a bloated Uncle Sam with the caption "Uncle needs a diet." But CAWG goes on to say that Rep Lewis got plenty of pork for his district in the past. They cite $13,600,000 in the 2004 Defense Appropriations bill alone. Questioned about an $8 million earmark in a 2002 spending bill, Rep Lewis is quoted as saying, "I feel I should play a significant role in trying to get back every dollar I can for the taxpayers I represent." That attitude led to about $20 billion in taxpayer money going to items never debated by Congress and added behind closed doors in the past year. (CAWG)
