Nebraska. You're Sure? Nebraska?

Nebraska ranks among the top six states in bioterrorism preparedness because we all know al Qaeda is hell bent on destroying the infidel Cornhuskers. (Omaha.com)

Where do you think your food comes from? Not the thoroughly paved east coast. If Nebraska and other primarily agricultural states are well prepared to deal with bioterrorism, good for them and the rest of us.

But, of course states like New York and Maryland -- in the "paved over" east -- are major agricultural states, in addition to having huge human populations. Federal farm subsidies only target a handful of crops -- primarily grains -- wheat, corn, rice, & soybeans. That means there's more of a perception that the "bread basket" is the only part of America that grows anything. We tend to forget the vegetables of California, fruit in Florida, poultry in Maryland, and milk from New York & Vermont.
