Clear as Day

Washington wants you to have a new TV. Unfortunately, they want you to pay for it yourself. The FCC is big on the switch to digital -- a big boon to TV stations. But you'll have to pay $500 to $7,000 for a digital TV or $200 for a box to let your old set work with the new signals. Only about 10% of us have the expensive new sets.

But FCC honcho Michael Powell went on Monday Night Football to tell us all how wonderful it will be when we have eye-popping, digital TV.

Really, though. Janet Jackson's breast popped up for a half second on low resolution, analog TVs -- and hundreds of thousands of people saw it clearly enough to complain to Powell's Commission. My set works fine. (LAT)
