Fortunate Son. A former Texas LT. Governor told 60 Minutes II he had “abused my position of power,” to help George W. Bush and others join the Texas National Guard to avoid service in the Vietnam War. Memos also show that Lt. Bush’s commander, Colonel Jerry B. Killian, wrote that his superiors pressured him to write favorable reviews of Lt. Bush’s performance, but that he refused. (NYT)
No Deferrment. An Ohio state senator is refusing to pull any strings to get out of his service. Steve Stivers (R-Columbus) ships out for the Persian Gulf in the near future.
