POLITICS -- All We Have to Fear is the Next 60 Days

Subtle Nuances Delivered with Hammer Blows. Some of the claims speakers at the RNC made about John Kerry stretched the truth. For instance, Sen Zell Miller (D-GA) claimed Kerry voted against a list of individual military weapons. Never happened that way. And Vice President Cheney claimed Kerry voted against body armor for troops in Iraq -- leaving out the fact that the administration never planned to provide the armor and the Democrats had to add $20 million to the bill to pay for it. (WashPost)

Good Cop, Bad Cop. The Bush campaign says Senator Zell Miller (D-GA) was speaking for himself and not for the Bush camp when he tore into Senator John Kerry. Miller was simply delivering the GOP keynote speech, which traditionally sets the direction of a party and touts the nominee. But it was just his own opinion, not that of the people who invited him to speak. (MSNBC)

Think it was Nasty Before? John Kerry has escalated the Second Vietnam War -- tearing into Vice President Dick Cheney for getting five deferments to avoid combat. He’s also launching attacks involving Haliburton and Saudi Arabian connections to the VP. It’s going to be such a pleasant autumn. (MSNBC)

Investigating Kerry. The Navy Inspector General has asked the Secretary of the Navy (a Bush political appointee) to investigate John Kerry’s medals awarded in the Vietnam War. (FOX News)

That’ll Teach ‘em to Throw Concrete Blocks. Proving that the tone of civil discourse in America is a model to the world, someone fired shots into the Republican Headquarters in Huntington, West Virginia. This comes on the heels of other acts against Democratic HQs in Ohio and Michigan. (WOWK)
