The officers who nominated him says a Tampa soldier will posthumously recieve the first Medal of Honor awarded since Somolia. The Pentagon has not confirmed that yet.
SFC Paul R. Smith died at Baghdad International Airport on April 4, 2003. He was an engineer building a holding pen for POWs, when Iraqi Republican Guard troops overran his company. Outnumbered and outgunned, the engineers had to retreat. The sergeant manned a .50-caliber machine gun to cover his unit along with medical and command trops. He died at his position, his body armor shattered by automatic weapons fire and rocket propelled grenades.
But no other Americans died in the attack. (The Ledger)
